We all know losing weight may not be a great deal but maintaining
that weight loss is a more difficult task. Various studies
have also shown that weight loss can easily return once
individuals quit exercising and eating right, or stop using
a weight loss medication.
Experts feel that people may have to take weight loss
medications on a long term basis, just like other medications,
such as those that control cholesterol or high blood pressure.
Scientists have been working hard to find out a diet
pill which can be used for long term. Most of the
prescription diet pills available today
can be used for a short period of time as there are serious
side effects with prolonged usage.
The researchers reported that Acomplia did
help users lose an average of 15 pounds over one year. And
the drug may also have an added health benefit, since it
also seemed to lower levels of dangerous blood fats known
as triglycerides while boosting blood levels of HDL "good"
cholesterol. Acomplia improves cardiovascular risk factors,
if that translates into a reduction in heart disease or
death is yet not known.
Scientists believe that there are certain systems that
are being over activated and are cause of obesity. Acomplia
can help in toning down that overactive system and this
will result in reduced food intake, stop storage of fat,
reduce the production of fat and improve the body's sensitivity
to blood sugar. Some doctors have hailed Acomplia
(Rimonabant) on the basis of clinical trials as
a major break through in the treatment of obesity.
The blocking of CB1 receptors helps in controlling food
cravings, improvement of cardiovascular/metabolic risk factors
in obese patients and reduces tobacco dependence without
post cessation weight gain in people who smoke.
Even though the prescription diet pill Acomplia looks promising
there are downsides too. The most common side effects of
Acomplia are nausea, dizziness, anxiety
and depression. The US FDA is worried about its side effects
and has kept its approval on hold.
Acomplia which will be launched under the brand name Zimulti
in US is expected to be in the market only in 2007.
